A new rumored leak about a possible Fortnite and Overwatch crossover or collab has recently been tweeted. While this collab idea and leak feels a little out of nowhere, there’s some plausibility behind it. 🗣️ The Leaked Crossover Rumor
According to a post by Shiina on Twitter, also known as X, a Fortnite and Overwatch 2 crossover will be happening in the next three months from now. The post was made on January 23rd, so the update is expected to drop sometime in April possibly. While this can sound like a wild, too good to be true rumor, this Twitter account has been known to be correct about past leaks before. There have been a bit more details added since the post. For example, there’s some conflicting dates over the possible crossover. While the initial and latest post claims that the collab will happen later, Shiina has also stated that some content, or at least an announcement, will be made in February. Some Overwatch characters that could appear have also been leaked like Mercy, Genji, and even Tracer.
🤔 Could a Fortnite x Overwatch Crossover Happen?
There’s some mixed possibilities over a Fortnite and Overwatch crossover. While Fortnite has made many what feels like impossible collabs in the past, Overwatch is a little different. Some fans have pointed out how both games compete for a somewhat similar audience. Both have a competitive fanbase that strives for multiplayer gameplay. However, Fortnite has more solo-based gameplay with multiple modes and can also fit with the shooter genre Overwatch strives in.
The biggest argument against the collab is the fear of Fortnite stepping into Overwatch’s genre. Are Blizzard and Epic Games competing companies? There isn’t too much backing behind this and we argue that Overwatch characters could fit in easily with Battle Royale gameplay. In fact, the Fortnite collab could bring in some much needed traction towards Overwatch 2. With other team-based shooters like Marvel Rivals competing much more heavily with Overwatch, the collab makes a lot of sense this way.
💰 Aren’t Fortnite and Overwatch Both Live-Services?
Our main concern over the crossover is the fact that both Fortnite and Overwatch 2 are live-service games. This means that both games and IPs utilize monetization for cosmetics and Season Passes to earn income for their respective companies. With that being said, there’s a real argument to be made over whether the collab could take potential players away from either game. That in turn could chase some profits away for either game.
However, the argument could also be turned on its head and made into a positive. While the monetization between Fortnite and Overwatch could make the partnership impossible, it could actually help their companies. After all, the collab is supposed to appeal to Overwatch fans, right? The collab could actually bring back some players to Overwatch who used to play a while ago.
Finally, if this collab were to happen, it would be probably the first time the gaming industry has seen two live-service games coming together like this. For the same reason being competition with one another, seeing two live-service games collabing is incredibly rare and probably hard to pull off. If Epic Games and Blizzard actually make the crossover happen, it could potentially become one of the biggest events they’ve seen in a while, which is saying a lot!
🔎 What Could the Fortnite x Overwatch Collab Look Like?
As mentioned prior, there’s already been some rumored leaks over the possible additions in the upcoming Fortnite and Overwatch crossover. Some new skins that could arrive at Fortnite’s Item Shop are the Tracer, Mercy, and Genji skins, but others are also possible. The collab could bring the opportunity of adding some iconic weapon cosmetics too.
As for the possible new Jam Tracks, Emotes, and Loading Screens, these could vary by a lot. New Loading Screens could just include new and exclusive artwork with Overwatch and Fortnite characters in them. Meanwhile, the theme song for the Overwatch games could be its own Jam Track, or perhaps a new track entirely!
There is some questioning to be had over how big this crossover could get too. Some collabs have been small such as the one for The Office. These partnerships were a simple bundle in the shop for some small cosmetics and references, but they were still popular with many fans. It would also make sense considering Fortnite’s current Season Chapter theming over Hollywood movies. Overwatch doesn’t quite fit into that, but maybe that’s where the 3 month waiting time makes some more sense.
